Dave “The Rave” Blackman loves crazy golf – he holds the course record on Saltburn sea-front (35 strokes for one hole). He is fluent in Klingon, he auditioned for The Voice in 1959, and has his own YouTube channel where he showcases his banging EDM remixes. He also fails miserably to take seriously our webmaster’s threats concerning deadlines for submitting potted biographies.
Peter is happiest when he gets the opportunity to combine his two hobbies – trainspotting and butterfly-collecting. When at home he continues to refurbish his 0.4HP Solex moped, a project he started in 1989. His proudest moment in recent years was acting as a model in a hairdressing competition. Sadly, he fails to take seriously our webmaster’s threats concerning deadlines for submitting potted biographies.
Vicky Smith has been an elder of Stockton Baptist Church since May 2019. She works as a secondary teacher in Middlesbrough and Heads the Health and Social Care department. Vicky has been attending Stockton Baptist Church since her childhood, apart from a seven-year stint in Bangladesh and India when her parents were missionaries. She has been following Jesus most of her life – she still makes many mistakes but relies upon His grace and love to keep her going. She currently helps in the Sunday school (Razamataz) and volunteers in the Coffee House. Her hobbies include sewing and quilting when she has time. Vicky’s secret love is to read fantasy novels – however, she will not readily admit to this.
I became a Christian when I was 16 and a church member of SBC (then “The Tab”) aged 17. I trained as an occupational therapist before sensing God’s call to work in a mission setting in Congo. The church endorsed this calling and gave great support for the 15 years that I was there.
On return to UK I got back into Occupational Therapy and church life in a variety of roles. Just as I was retiring from work the ministry among asylum seekers and refugees began to develop and it is a true joy and privilege to be part of it.
Having joined the eldership, I appreciate the opportunity to work with the leadership team.
Hobbies include hospitality, cake decoration, and trying to keep fit!
Florence has a son called Tinotenda, which in the Shona language of Zimbabwe means “we thank You”
Florence became a Christian at the age of 13 in her country of birth, Zimbabwe, during a holiday club that was run at the local Baptist Church. She helped with teaching Sunday school at the same church in her teens.
Since moving to Stockton Baptist Church, Florence has been involved in the worship team.
Florence is really excited to see the move of the Spirit among the churches of Stockton and how they are working together to expand God’s kingdom. She has a heart for the people of Stockton who are in need.
Florence works for an organisation that does quality assurance for private colleges in the UK and abroad.
In her spare time, Florence enjoys singing and has been learning to play the guitar; she enjoys a bit of exercise and has an orange belt in kickboxing; she loves to go for walks in the local park and to meet up with friends.
Mark comes from an Anglican background and became a Christian when he was 14. He is married to Carolyn and they have two children – Robbie, aged 22, and Eve who is 16. They joined the Church in the early 1990s and have been involved in leading youth activities since that time. Mark is particularly passionate about expressing God’s love through active involvement in environmental projects and social justice issues. He is now a primary teacher, having previously managed the Museums Service in Stockton. Mark enjoys attending live music events however, he admits that his big failing is being a season ticket holder at Bradford City!
Matty is married to the wonderful Jess. They in particular passionately love the urban communities in Teesside in which they live. They long to see a move of the Holy Spirit, which results in God’s kingdom advancing and disciples being made in those areas. Matty’s heart is to see every believer take hold of their identity as a child of God, called to be a disciple on a mission to make disciples that make disciples, in whatever context God has put them. When they’re not having people round for food, they love escaping to the mountains!
John is married to Evelin and they have three teenage boys to keep life interesting.
He became a Christian at the age of 12 at a Youth holiday and has been actively involved in church since then. He trained as a pharmacist and has worked around the UK but also has worked in Nepal with a medical mission, helping the poor and disadvantaged. He sees the church as a family who are learning together to walk closer with God, and has a desire to support those around him develop that relationship.
He is a leader in the Boys’ Brigade and is a member of the sound team.
He enjoys running, cycling and is trying to climb all the Munros in Scotland (but is making very slow progress!)
Andy is married to Julie and they have two sons, Thomas and James (and a Labrador called Spice.)
Andy became a Christian aged 11 at a Youth Conference. He grew up in a Christian home and has been a member at SBC since the mid 1980’s, where he met Julie. He presently works for a company specialising in compliance with Packaging Waste Regulations, which is becoming more prevalent due to programs on TV like the Blue Planet.
He, and Julie spend a lot of time supporting their son, James, who has Autism. James is a keen DJ and Julie and Andy regularly ‘roadie’ for him. Andy also enjoys walking the dog & watching sport, especially football and tries to get to see live matches at Newcastle as often as he can.
Andy would like to see more men in the church get involved, and would encourage them to meet socially to be supportive of each other in their walk with God.
Carlie came to Stockton Baptist Church in 1988 after her family moved to the area and has benefited from many of the church activities herself over the years. She has served in many roles including youth work, audio visual, worship band, student work and heading up the treasury team.
In 2017 Carlie began her second stint as church treasurer and deacon having previously served from 2006 to 2010. Carlie is married to Mark and they have two boys, Noah & Ben. Outside of Church Carlie trained as an accountant and currently works as a manager in the NHS.
I am married to Peter and we have two children, Isaac (10) and Martha (7). I started my new role as Children’s Pastor early in 2017 and we are enjoying being part of our new church family here in Stockton. As well as a desire to see children growing to know and love God, I also have a passion for musical worship and enjoy leading children in worship and exploring ways for children and adults to worship together. I play piano, flute, saxophone and I sing (not all at the same time!) and when I get some spare time I like to draw, paint and catch up on Australian soaps!
I became a Christian over 30 years ago after being invited to the Church by Ruth, who became my wife. We have 3 children Becky, Jonny and Sarah, as well as 2 Border Collies! I am a retired GP but as a Christian you never actually retire. I head up the Church’s International Mission Action Group and have helped organise a number of mission trips to Uganda and Kenya. Ruth and I love to show hospitality and the Ingleby Barwick Home Group meets at our house. I love encouraging and helping people to grow in their walk with the Lord. In my spare time I enjoy exercising, gardening, photography and restoring my old MG sports car.
Diane is married to Paul and they have 3 fabulous, grown up children, Matthew, Jess and Sophie. She became a Christian at the age of fourteen, having had no previous involvement with church. Seeing the difference that knowing God made to the lives of her grandparents and hearing the gospel message had a huge impact on her, and one that has affected the rest of her life. Diane is very much involved in the music ministry at Church and loves to sing and lead others in worship. She is also part of her local Life Group. Diane works as a nurse with vulnerable young people in the community, a role that she finds challenging but very rewarding. In her spare time, she loves making and listening to music, travelling, spending time with her family and walking her Cocker Spaniel, Darcey.
Andrew is married to Denise and is the proud Dad of three grown-up sons. A Christian since the age of 19, and in full-time church leadership since 1991, Andrew is excited about the town’s churches playing their part in the transformation of Stockton. He also looks forward to seeing our Church experience more of the presence of God and the power of the Holy Spirit. Andrew enjoys playing the guitar (pointing out that he’s suffered for his art and now it’s the audience’s turn) and walking the dog on local beaches with Denise.
